Final Project
The first part of this project was to create a clock that represents a social issue. The issue I chose is overpopulation and its impact on natural land. The clock is designed to show how, over time, urban environments take over natural spaces, symbolizing the gradual loss of nature due to human expansion.
I chose this topic because it raises important questions: How will we produce enough resources to support the growing population? How long can we sustain this rapid growth that keeps increasing every second? Overpopulation also ties into other critical issues like climate change, healthcare, and resource shortages, making it a deeply connected global challenge.
For the clock’s design, I used a topographic map system to highlight the effects of overpopulation on the landscape. The clock is made from pinewood, and I used a laser printer to cut and etch the topographic map details. The design features multiple layers, with the urban environment as the base and the natural landscape layered on top. This layering creates a visual representation of how urban spaces are gradually overtaking nature, bringing attention to the issue in a creative way.
The second part of the project was to create a diagram to showcase our social issues. We first started with sketches, figuring out the dimensions, and doing a lot of test prints to get everything right. What looks good on a computer screen can often turn out too small or too large when printed, especially for text, so we spent a lot of time adjusting to ensure the proper size and scale. The display was made of corrugated cardboard to reflect sustainability, with laser-cut typography and organic line designs that tied into the theme. The project includes sections like "Why We Should Worry," featuring images to evoke concern, and a world map diagram illustrating biodiversity loss by region using bold colors. We also included photos of affected animals to make the data more relatable. The process taught us the importance of prototyping, material testing, and how to translate abstract issues into a clear and engaging visual narrative.
